Dear Jane, dear Lacefriends,
That's the problem about the old books they have some mistakes in them.
Barbara Uthmann was a very important person at her time because she let
learn the people from Erzgebirge to make bobbin lace at a time silver mines
were nearly empty, but she didn't invent it. It
Dear Spiders,
If I remember correctly, the Hungerford Pollen lace collection is housed in
the Victoria Museum located in Melbourne, Victoria Australia. Spiders down
under took me there when I visited their country 13 years ago. There is a second
lace collection in Melbourne worth seeing,
I would've
thought there was a higher proportion of lacemakers in the UK. I certainly
have found that its much easier, engaging in casual conversation when meeting
people, to find a lacemaker or someone who knows a lacemaker in the UK.
And having moved to America from England four years

The postal workers have gone back to work, but it's estimated that it will
take several weeks to clear the back log. Having said that, I've had no
trouble with mail that I've posted being delivered, and I've received all
that's been posted to me as normal so far.

I think crediting Barbara Uttman as inventor of bobbin lace is definitely
incorrect. What she may have done was to establish a lace school in her
town, thereby making it a lace making center. I wouldn't use Mrs. Palliser
as a respectable source. She was writing in the late 19th century.
Hi all,
Today, I have received from the Town Hall of Arenys de Munt, the picture
of the lacemaker monument that just has been placed last week in the
center of the village, and yes Jean, very near to the Lace Museum.
I have posted the pictures of both lace monuments: That of Arenys de Mar

Look at the numbers Carolina (Gallego) gives us when she posts about the Spanish events --
hundreds come, with almost no enticement (vendors, yes; but not much
in the way of workshops,
if the whole thing takes place in one day).
Usually there are lace day events once a year in many villages

Hi all,
I still don't think you can use Guild membership numbers as an accurate
guide to how popular lace is in a country. There are a lot of valid
reasons why a lacemaker might chose not to join an official group. It
could be a guide, but there are a lot of factors (that we've discussed

They go on sale from time to time. I particularly like the smaller Table

Dear Arachnes,
Some of the more recent discussion about Barbara Uttman and historical bias
has moved away from lace, into the realm of political opinions. I remind you
that, when a thread goes off on a more general tangent, it should be moved

Although they are not an item we normally make, we could make

Rose-Marie,
Yes I have thought about it several times. Not specifically a book from a

the entire book with illustrations in my head. Have my sketchy notes on
the layout too. Just a matter of putting it into fruition. I
