I guess that would depend on what your want to do with the thread. If you're going to keep it as an historical sample, then I'd keep as much intact as possible. I have some of this old thread and have used it. It's a bugger to work with--since it's so old, it is very brittle and will withstand only

Hi Brenda and everyone A couple of ideas: 1. Instead of doing a thread wrap, and without breaking the package, could you arrange a group of threads side by side supported by something with a measure on it? 2. I have an old thread like this and if I would use it, I would place it on a skein winder/

To answer whether you should break the wrapping threads, you'd have to decide what your intention really is for these threads: Will you preserve them "as-is" for historic reasons, or would you use the thread for a reconstruction? I think that the answer might help solve the question you have.
