I'm fishing a bit at this point, Michael. The thing not indicated in your snips from the .config file for the *failing* sustem is IDE chipset support. For *example*, my (working) 2.2.x kernel includes these .config lines: CONFIG_BLK_DEV_CMD640=y # CONFIG_BLK_DEV_CMD640_ENHANCED is not set CONFIG_
