On the legacy the cross bars are your centers, head and tail, on the Wood Chuck the head stock and tail stock are bolted to the cross members and rise above them 6 inches to allow for the 12" turn radius. The top bars are only 9 inches apart so the 8 inch stock I was using crowded the bit

Since we are talking alternatives now, I recall a method of using a belt sander. You build a box over the belt and toss in cubed pieces of wood. You let them toss and turn for a while and they become naturally round. I've never tried this method, but it stuck in my head. Also, I didn't see
