Firstly, my apologies. I should have said I'm still working in VERSION 6. so I don't have the new "include invisible". I do have a lot of "Private" Individuals, so that's probably the answer. How would I test this? Can't figure out how to Search a Focus Group for Private Individuals. Regards Mary

I tested this with the sample file and without tagging "include invisible ..." I got 145 individuals (from 158) and after tagging this option I had 158 individuals in the Surname index. The strange thing is that there are no invisible individuals in the sample file (there are 13 private individuals
