I'm sorry but I do not accept the premise of this thread -
non-standard locations. There is no such thing as a Standard
location and in my view to try and make it such on a universal basis is
a waste time. OK for the States, maybe, but for anywhere else generally

Off the main topic, but since you used it as an example, I record
*every* name I find in the Alternate Names section with the
source(s) of each name used. What I believe is the current most
correct name is the one I show as the Main Name. That is a major
advantage of Legacy - it lets me

I've been using the modern equivalent to the country and/or area for my
royal and/or noble ancestors.. it may not be correct, but, I find that this
system works for me.
I've also been doing that for my ancestors that were located here in the
states... i.e. West Jersey is more specifically

Thanks to all who responded, especially Wendy and Mike. I think you are
understanding what I am trying to explain, although perhaps poorly. Every
day that I study more about medieval times I get answers to some of my
questions but have a dozen others to be answered. It doesn't help me in my

Marcellyn,
Your example of Normandy, an area which I know very well, is a perfect
example as to why the so called standard is quite unsuitable for European
countries. Today Normandy is *not* a state but a Region and was formerly a

I have the same problem with Lower Canada, Upper Canada, Canada East and
Canada West prior to the modern use. I would be interested to know how
people give the information for early Canada and also for the colonies, ie
Massachusetts Bay etc.
Thanks!

George G. Morgan, an internationally recognized author, speaker and
authority on genealogy, recently had this to say about recording locations:

advice, it might be a good idea to record somewhere within Legacy the

I use Google maps to find the location as accurately as possible, even

Hi Marcellyn,
There have been some excellent posts on this subject in response to
yours already. What I wanted to add is in relation to your question
what data do I put in which of the four parts of the location. I'd
say don't sweat over the four parts, and enter the location as it was.
