Have you run Check'n'Repair? This might solve the problem.
First make a backup of your file. Then run Check'n'Repair - sometimes
it's necessary to run it twice.

It came with XP Home, which I have kept updated with SP3 and automatic
update.
Much cheaper than replacing a computer.
