It is definitely a bug. A piece of software should NOT hang,
regardless of what you have been doing or for how long.
So, I guess you are saying there is no plan to fix the bug.
The workaround is to close and reopen legacy. ;-)

I think that if you have used a source for ANY portion of the line the
text for the labels on the line will change color. For instance, a date
of birth which has a source will cause labels for the entire line
including the "in" to change color even if you do not have a place of
birth.
It's not really a bug. I suspect that you have probably been working in
Legacy for quite a while when this happens. You found the solution: just
close Legacy and reopen it. Other times when things happen to your
computer, rebooting is all that's needed.

The Red labels indicate that a source has been assigned to the data
which is in red. Data without sources are in black.
Even though you say you have no data entered for some of the red fields
you must have a source assigned to that field. The ones with data which
are in black have no source assign
The red field names on the Individual's Information window indicates
that the data has been sourced.

This is my favorite way, though I mostly use the metadata fields since adding
the info to the photo makes it a larger size. The bonus is that you can see it
at a glance whenever you view the photo on your computer. If you are resaving
the file into a jpg smaller size for Legacy, It's easy to cro
