User's Group Meeting. Learn tips, tricks, and best practices related to
using Legacy. Beginning through advanced topics will be discussed -

Geoff,
I just had a look at your syllabus document. In the Dates topic on page
one you do not say anything about numeric date entry needing to match
the users Windows regional setting for dates. Since the default numeric
date for the US region is mo-day-year anyone from the US who entered a

Goeff, I note in your Webinar notes that “Est = Estimated” has been dropped
from allowed dates. One of the main reasons for my switching to Legacy was
this descriptor. I use it especially when I know the birth dates of one or
more children and only the names of parents, grand parents,
Howard,
I have had no problems with using Cir, or Abt. instead of est.
I have now replaced EVERY date that is not complete with some sort of
descriptor like abt, aft, bef, bet, cir, cal.
and I am extremely pleased with the results as it make all the sorting so
much better (I have a rather large
Why do you both think that Est isn't accepted? I'm using it just fine and
it shows in the Help file as acceptable.
I don't get any Potential Problem warning, nor an error with Options
Customize 5.5 selected.
In the Dates topic under Approximating Dates it says
When entering an estimated date,
I am trying to do a descendant narrative report (a .pdf) and want to change
all the fonts from the default Arial and Times New Roman to Calibri but
cannot see how to do all of them at one time -- is that possible? And if
so, how?
Thanks,
Pat
Legacy User Group guidelines:
No it is not possible. You have to set the font for each part of the
report individually.
If you want to use that font in all your reports you can set that as the
default for the reports in Options Fonts Report Fonts
The reset button on the individual reports will then change all the

I have been using Family Tree Maker for nearly ten years, but to me, it's
obvious that they are never going to really get serious about their product. I
have a number of serious, seemingly irreconcilable problems with it and have
decided that as painful as it's going to be, I want to switch
Sherry, Perhaps I was not clear enough about my concern for “Est” as a prefix
for dates. Legacy version 7 was clear that “Est” is an allowed prefix in
addition to “Abt”, “Cir”, and “Cal” for indicating uncertainty. However,
Legacy 8 is unclear. “Est” is no longer a listed option under
Howard,
I copied what I found in the Help file for Legacy in the topic of Entering
Dates in Date Fields, accessed by looking at Dates: Approximating or
Dates: Entering in the Help index, and it *is* supported as I stated in
my previous email.
You are correct that it's not in Options Customize
I switched from FTM, but 2006 or somewhere back there. I am still in the
process of moving over to Legacy 8 via GEDCOM. My trees are much smaller, and
I am certainly not a Legacy architect. I am just bumbling along. So far, I
have noticed that in the General Notes, there are a lot of spaces
Why not use “Abt” or “a” for short data entry?

Gregory,
I think you will find a number of users on this list who can help you out.
I doubt any single person may be able to answer all of your questions.
You would be best served by posting you exact questions, maybe as several
posts relating to content.
I dont think any problems should be

Priscilla,
Relative to the spaces in the Notes, this article from our Knowledge Base
explains it

In a GEDCOM file, multiple-line notes are supposed to be *broken in the

Abt means something quite different than Est.
Abt means that the event happened around a certain time. My grandfather
was born abt 1885.
Est means you don't know for sure and you're estimating or guessing. Based
on information I have (wife's date, date indicated in census based on age,

Cindy, I would just record the three possible husbands in each of the
daughters' Research Notes (cite the obituary). Or you could set up a To-Do

saying it could be quite simple to figure out, life generally happens
Sally, Just for future reference, I believe you can choose which three tags to
show. (In case you are in the middle of a big tagging exercise see the tag #
isn't showing.) I am temporarily unable to open my Legacy to verify, but I'm
pretty sure I'm right. --Paula
Hi Gregory,
I hope you have had a look at Legacy - you can download the basic version for
free. You can do a gedcom import of your tree and give it a test run. You can
upgrade to the Deluxe version of Legacy at any time without any loss of data.

How do I get rid of the underline in the picture captions in a descendant

Also in the date field of one of the pictures I have two lines, the lower

I will begin working on the Event sentences first. I see that in the

I've never run into that, but I like your [first name blank] Peter ... or maybe

Hi Pat,
In Reports, on the Pictures tab there is a button Set Regular Picture Options.
Here you can get rid of the bold.
However, the line is not optional. The only way to get rid of it is to not
include Caption or Description.
I've never really noticed these as I don't have many captions or
Did you select Notes under the Event Options button on the Include tab of
Report Options?
It sounds like you're using List rather than Sentence. You need to select
the Sentence option on the Format tab under the Event Narrative
Formatting button.
