I have a template which I created in 1.6.0 and I am using 1.8.0.
I changed the version field in the template to 1.7.28 which is what the
convert-ly -e does on an already created file.
I can't however parse the file and now convert-ly -e doesn't work
either.

which will update the file to work with your new LilyPond version

YES! lilypond works again! I never would have identified this problem

I get this error message when I use the tab key in lilypond-mode:
