moviePlayer exhibits this behavior, so this feature may be built into
modern versions of the QuickTime playback engine ...
maybe turning DTS off would let a Director bhnr catch the first click
(& then toss it away)?

I'm not aware of that as any sort of a general issue so it leaves me to
wonder what's unique about your movie in particular. You have a QT
sprite on stage

The easiest would be to just unsubscribe, then subscribe when you get back.

And I agree with you. All those are valid points. I just think too
often we all direct it at Tom. He's a nice guy and puts up with a lot
more than most of us would. Just a gentle reminder (not directed at you
per se) that we should try not to shoot the messenger when we are ranting.
