Thanks for the input. I have purchased an Nvidia GT210 and will install
it shortly. All reports indicate it should be less problematic than the
ATI Radeon based boards.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive PCI-Express video card which is well
supported by X11 and does not require ATI drivers?
Resolution required is 1920x1080 or better.

Nvidia works for me. I have a GeForce 9400GT driving two 1920x1080
displays, one of them is a 47" Sharp Aquos HDTV.
The sound doesn't work on the Aquos, but I use the computers sound system,
so it isn't a problem. I didn't have any issues at all setting it up,
basically it's the same two monitor
I've also had good success with Nvidia in Linux. I don't have a
recommendation regarding which Nvidia card but I've not had one that
didn't work. I've also used the VDPAU acceleration. It also works fine
with bluray playback smoothly. I found this page useful:
