I am replying to my own question here, in case anybody has the same problem.
I had to set :
EXTRAVERSION = -SuSE
n the Makefile (/usr/src/linux-2.4.7.SuSE/) and then recompile the kernel.

I have not seen this problem yet. Are you using a proxy server? Do you
have enough free disk space in /var?

Indeed, that was it. I originally defined the /var partition too small. I
fixed it and the rest of the install was very clean. Thanks.

There is some truth to this assertion. Linux on S/390 does not do well where

Now I do have PHP4 working but it is not recognizing pg_connect function.
How do I get the postgresql functionality rolled into libphp4.so.
I tried --with-postgres option and it did not make any difference.

Try looking for pdksh, which should be installed.
However, all the shell script does is run through all the rpm's in the DB2
distribution. I just found the DB2 rpms and did the installs myself.

We experienced similar problems. Our solution is to move the CD off of the
ISO 9660 image and onto our internal FTP server (which can be your OS390
system). We then pointed the YAST install to the FTP site and installed
away.

It seem, at first glance, that the contents of pam_pdos.so.1 weren't created
using -fPIC. I'll try a closer look but this is a symptom I always
experience when that is the case. Did that pam stuff get built by you?
Duplex... ;-)
