Thanks for all your replies, I was able to proceed with the installation,
however had another problem. I'll open a new thread.

Thanks for the assistance with this.
Installing Samba 2.2.6 (from the source) solved the problem.

Hello from Gregg C Levine
I verify that one, Chris. My proof comes from Intel Linux, Slackware of
course. Betsy, grab a copy of Putty, and add the ssh support binary. Or

allow you to login. I use it myself. The big problem will be

Some distributions do not allow login to root using telnet. You should be able to 'su'
to superuser, though. If it's really necessary to login as root, use an emulator that
supports SSH. From my win2k system, I use 'putty' which can use either telnet or ssh
protocols.

The redbook "Linux on IBM eserver zSeries and S/390: Large Scale Linux
Deployment" suggests using the external interrupt mechanism. Code is
provided.

We have a couple of mods in place that let VM tell Linuz to shut down. There's a
patched version of mingetty that automatically logs in the VM console to root, and
then all you need is a script in
the root PATH called SHUTDOWN (all upper case) that contains:
shutdown -y -g0
Then you use the VM
I think I recall a while back some discussion of a patch that allows Linux to
trap an interrupt when zVM is going down. It allows Linux, in theory at least, a
chance to die gracefully before zVM does, or something like that.
Does anyone recall this - or know where I can find the code?
Thanks,

Or maybe /var/log/cron which is right on my system.

thx to all on this. I ended up using the hardware console based approach

not up to the level where /proc/sysinfo works. thx again to all for your

First (for several others posting here) gdm has nothing to do with a mouse. It's the
Gnome display manager, and the reason you'd want to run it (on an Intel or a 390 Linux
server) is to set up xdmcp so that an x-server can log in.
If you do something like "ps -ef | grep gdm", what do you see? On
Accessing from here is OK...

It's probably an internet routing problem, since I can get to it from

Thanks Ashley. I knew I had to be missing something basic.
The file you want is /usr/src/linux-version/arch/s390/boot/image
Move this to /boot/vmlinuz-version and update zipl.conf

After 'make image' your new kernel lie inlinux/arch/s390/boot/image
Don't forget to do 'make modules modules_install' and copy System.map to

After having compiled a vmlinux kernel, to try and get LVM working, I've
hit a brick wall. Changing zipl.conf and running zipl angainst the new

it worked. F11 was F "dash" (to the right of the 0), and F12 was "F ="

Thanks for your replies. cntrl-F and 0 works. But what shall I hit for PF11 or

just use PF1-PF10?
