Hello (again) from Gregg C Levine
Adam, folks, and especially you, Jim.
I spent the better part of a session on IBM software, middle and other
wise, trying to convince some 'droid from Tivoli of that fact. He was
firmly convinced that the only purpose for z/VM was that it should be
used to manage z

Yeah, that's pretty much to what I was referring. TSM would be a whole
lot more useful if
Okay, I should have added "current" to my list. TSM on VM isn't, and Tivoli has made
it clear that it never will be. I'm not interested in a product if the product's
vendor isn't interested in it.

Silly Question!

backup program. We (Dennis Strat

HEY, TIVOLI, ARE YOU LISTENING?

No, of course not.
Also you could make the backup in tree steps:
1) zVM backup (system packs only): there are the mdisks 123, 124, 125
that are the xxxres, xxxw01, xxxw02, etc, dasds accessed r/o. So, with
the system running you can make a ddr from those MAINT minidisks to tapes.
Also you should not forget to make

There is a 64-bit version of DB2 UDB available for Linux for
The biggest problem with Red Hat on the mainframe is that it's a minority product.
Most Linux users on zSeries use SUSE, and most products for Linux on zSeries are for
SUSE. We tried to find a backup product for Red Hat Linux, and couldn't find a GA
product that met our needs (e.g. uses mainfr

I believe DB2 Connect 8.1 with Fix Pak 5 applied is supposed to provide
64-bit support. But only for DB2 Connect.

connect my php apps to a db2 database.

I was just going to reply with essentially the same thought. I'm just about
positive that there is no 64-bit version of DB2/UDB available for Linux/390.
I think if he removes the --with-db2 stuff, PHP will build just fine.

I should probably wait for someone more knowledgeable then me to reply, but here goes
anyway.
It looks to me like you tried to link a 64 bit program with a 32 bit library. I don't
think there is a 64 bit version of DB2 yet, so I don't know how to get around this.
All the undefended references
Anyone have any luck with getting PHP compiled for PHP4
I'm having the hardest time with this. All hte list serves and forums make it sound
easy, and i have done it before on a redhat system. I know it works but whenever i do
it on Suse and try to compile it i get these errors. Am i missing some
Hello from Gregg C Levine
Neale, for those of us who've forgotten what Ingres is, would you care
to present a restatement of facts regarding the database product? Or
for that matter anyone else.
I recognize the name from the Cliff Stoll book, but that's about it.

Just be aware that diag drive is not supported in 64-bit
mode. so there might be an additional performance hit for
those wanting larger machines for database and such

I think you are asking how to backup the VM system. Use DDR to back up all
DASD to tape, be sure to do all cylinders (0-END) and you should shutdown
your Linux guests and all non-essential services while backing up to ensure
data integrity.
For example, to backup real device A00:
