VM is a great facility to prepare an operating system to run stand alone in
an LPAR. .

Looks like there will be a zVM apar soon to correct this.

Bruce,
I have a z9 BC. And the HMC has enhanced 'load from remote source' over my
previous processor.

David,
I know I can get a 'loaner' of z/VM. But my z/VM skills are quite old, very
rusty, and I was never a (z/)VM Sysprog, anyway. I'm a (z/)VSE Sysprog! I
know, there are 'cookbooks' (I have them). And while I wouldn't mind a z/VM
trial, I wouldn't want it to go away in a few months, and
Can you put it on the Slack/390 download ftp server?

What kind of machine will you be using? The way the HMC works and
what your options are depend on the machine.
If you were lucky enough to have a z10, then you could use the z/VM
Evaluation Edition for a quick way to start, or even better, as David
suggests, get a "loaner" z/VM.

Talk to your IBM people. z/VM loaners are easily available if you ask.

Morning all,
I am preparing to do a new 'bare-metal' (i.e. LPAR) install of Suse 10 SP 2.
No, no z/VM, no IFL. (Maybe if I'm good, Santa will ...)
I installed SLES 9 SP 3 at one time, with considerable assistance from a Novell
engineer (Thanks Mike!), so I have done this once before. But

Thanks for your input.
Unfortunately for us we have no access to TPC-R.
The zOS storage folks control it. They say they have put our VM volumes
into global mirror. But although we can vary VM volumes online we can't
use any of them . Can't even read volume labels. Acting as if the

To paraphrase a recently bailed-out automobile industry, this isn't your
father's Solaris. Especially on z10s. 8-)

Neale answered that.
I wonder if anyone will bundle it with Hercules? Or is openSolaris
unable to run on the "bare metal" as yet?
It will not run on bare metal.
Hercul
OpenSolaris will only run under z/VM.

No it comes from the fact that the PowerPC called their project Polaris.
Being a southern-hemisphere born type I gave it the name of the brightest
star Sirius.
Currently it is z/VM only.

Huh? Is this an obscure-- or not so obscure-- reference to the
infamous Sirius Cybernetics Company?
