I really didn't like the idea of trying to link the disks from another
zLinux ID... that seems very error-prone. But, if that's the only choice,

I'm not sure single-user mode will help you here. According to RedHat,
single-user mode isn't appropriate for situations where you aren't able to
successfully mount your file systems:

Have you tried looking in the local firewall definitions (via Yast -> Security
-> firewall)? Sometimes SLES11 tends to stick the new interface in the
"External Zone" and therefore SSH access is prohibited.

Well, there is no VIO in z/VM as there is in, say, System p
virtualization, s
We have good experince of adding two VDISK for SWAP, about 64 MB each and one
real physical nearly 400 MB, AND give it memory so it almost not do any paging.
AND don't split one disk into partitions, use smaller disks with only one
partition on each,
much simpler.
