I had to add the timezone for 2012 in my SYSTEM CONFIG file. I thought (that's
the problem) it might be a good idea to IPL for 2 reasons, first it's been
months since vm was ipl'd, second I did not know if the changes would be in
affect without it.

seen if you are IPLing a second level z/VM system and your console is
not in CONMODE 3270 or you are using the non-3270 system console in the
HMC. If you are doing the IPL from an HMC you would be better off using

Dave, I am using the HMC as the console. I am very new to zvm so not familiar
with vm console or SAPL, would that be in the cp planning and admin guide?

So you are in a recovery situation.
Since VM was still running when you hit the switch (clicked the load
button), it will do its best to recovery spool files from checkpoint.
But it tells you
Enter FORCE .. you shouldn't lose anything.
And the changes in SYSTEM CONFIG will be in effect the NEXT TIME YOU IPL in
the specified date ranges -- z/VM will not switch automatically -- those
values are only good at boot time. You will have to specifically issue CP
