Thanks Dan, that kicked that can down the road a bit! I misread the doc,
thought it said 18 was the last that *did* support CTC. Switched to LCS
and now VNC works. Still having some other issues but will thrash on those
myself for awhile...

The thought is to stop PPRC, replace the secondary box, then start up PPRC

Then hyperswap.
Then stop PPRC, replace the secondary box, start up PPRC again.
Linux wouldn't exploit new things like zHPF until it was restarted, but that's
ok with us.

We also use TDMF from z/OS while the system is down. It would be nice (hello
IBM) if TDMF was available for z/VM to perform the migration without an outage
like it does for z/OS.
I'd be interested in hearing how a PPRC method would work.

Typically you would bring down guests and DDR all the volumes to the new
DASD.. then clip (relabel) all the old volumes (and probably
format/scrub/etc).. make adjustments to system config as needed to keep
old stuff varied off, etc.Note that I'm strictly talking about doing
this at the z/VM
We shutdown it down and had z/OS move the whole thing with TDMF. That thing
is much faster than anything we have on VM (DDR, CA Hidro).

When installing in Hercules please read also the thread on the
Fedora/s390x mailing list starting with

I think when you do not add the :1 you don't get a connection at all. I did
use :1 and it did connect but it never painted the screen, and subsequently
died...

I think the one non-obvious thing with using VNC was you had to use port 1?
It's been a while since I tried it. Read the message very carefully.

Thanks Kenneth, that's pretty much the parm file change I made also, just
that the VNC connection didn't work for me.

We ran into the "/root not found" issue too, and opened a bugzilla for it. The
fix was to add a line to the PARM file for the install boot, as follows:
root=live:http://{hostname}/fedora/18/install.img
This should point to the web server repository for the packages.
