So I have seen a similar thing happen when database connections slow/hang.
For some reason when things get queued up in the DB connection pools, more and
more CPU is burned to manage all those unfinished connections. Things then
really fall apart then because you have less and less CPU to do

We have been using a supported version of Liferay (Liferay EE) for over 2
years now and have not had any problems. Currently we are on IBM JRE 1.7
and 1.6 on a dev server. We use tomcat as provided by SLES 11 SP2 and SP3.

one just happens to be old enough to have been created with SP1. We plan on
upgrading it but don't want to change too many things at once.

applications person describes the problem rather than me. In general, once
it gets up to a certain load of users, response goes into the crapper and the
