Now, to see if that also resolved the error messages I have been receiving.
Is there any way to tell 'who' samba is trying to connect to when it issues
those messages?

U... is this samba trying to act as a client? Or is it a server?
If your samba is set up as a client you'll know from the /etc/fstab;
Otherwise, Samba is the listener awaiting
