If you have access to VM/CMS, you can see railroad track (RRT) diagrams
by typing e.g.
help cp ipl
which will display information about the CP IPL command.

The first place I ever saw railroad track diagrams was in the appendix
of Niklaus Wirth's book about Pascal.

I remember that back when a place I worked was running MVS/ESA guests we found
that there was a point in their IPL processing that required a second processor
to produce startup diagnostics it the IPL failed; without the second processor
the guest would just hang. We added a second vCPU to get
