The main two "optimisations" were measurable in isolation (small
test programs), but not in the benchmark program

Yes. First rule of optimization: don't optimize something that's
statistically irrelevant. The speed or lack thereof of portage
is irrelevant g

Mark,
Try loading Fedora Core 1 - 100 MB /boot partition, 10GB /
partition, 2047MB swap, the rest of first disk as /audio or whatever.
Load "everything" in the package selection (there's an "everything"
button - this is the coward's way out but you don't have dependency
hell). Go to Planet C

I have to disagree with this advice. Though gentoo will give you immense
insight into how things work and it's probably unparallelled performance I

Thanks for your support and I will give Gentoo a shot..
If I have learnt anything by re-installing it is that the second+ time
around one starts getting selective and soon a lot of things don't
seem as important by the third time around.

Hi my name is Mark and I have been a silent member for two
years - having very little experience with the in's and out's of
Linux. For many years I have blindly believed that Linux is the
way to go - more because of the concept of Open Source which
ties in exactly with my own belief structure.
