Here's a simple solution for getting fai-cd work again on etch.
Add the following line to your sources.list
deb http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/download etch koeln
then
aptitude install mkinitrd-cd
Call fai-cd.
That's all? Yes.
What does it do? It installs the mkinird-cd package

the reason was not an error in the cfengine script, but a setting in
/bin/fai-do-scripts (line 116) which executed cfagent with parameter
"-k", preventing the files being copied.
