As I promised, I'll set out my choice and why:
I got an HP 5550.
It worked straight out of the box with the already running hpijs driver
on the parallel port (and so therefore, it's OK without change, as my
network printer for 2 Win 98 and one Linux client).

HP 3820 work well for me, and have official drivers for linux (known as hpijs)
it's cost something like 400 nis i think and worth any shekel.
I use it via usb (modprobe printer if u ask) and it's work like charm.
If you want use parallel port or don't have usb - u can connect the printer
I bought epson because i have seen at www.linuxprinting.org that it has
the most complete drivers, but the heads clog every second day.
Look for HP, they are very strong.
Another parameter is the ink. You can look at www.zap.co.il to compare
ink prices.
After you choose a few printers, search
