hi i'm looking for an external hard drive, similiar to the usb-hd boxes there are in the shops. however i want it to be over ethernet (for many resons), and supported by linux ( and prefferably also by xp). there are the iscsi/hyperscsi/aoe protocols. but i was not able to find any cheap

I'm not sure there is such an adapter. Since you already have a NIC adaptor on the client side, what you are asking for is a server that provides ethernet access to storage. Well, AoE which you noted does that, so does iSCSI, but nobody I know of is doing a minimal device that will host a single
