I finally got hold of the person in charge of
/etc/sendmail.cf
After I explained the problem (again! ) he said
Great, then there's no problem because everything works just like
it should. Internally, there's no reason to use the fully qualified
domain name.
At this point I see no other option

It seems bgumail is blocking both traceroute and ping
(while allowing telnet and ftp).
