freeswan was another way I looked at , but ip/sec was horrible at
the time and didn't (maybe still doesn't) deal with dynamic ip
assignment nicely.

HP doesn't support ATIP,
whereas the Ricoh does. Speculation: cdrecord asks for ATIP, then
used some default/random buffer contents, and this causes the HP to
give up.
