I know that signal 11 with gcc is a sign of bad hardware; however it
strikes me that I don't get random oopses - a whole bunch of them is appended.
I used 2.4.0 with alsa, kmp3player running and an endless loop compiling the
kernel.

Sorry, but it seems to be hardware. More conservative memory settings
let the system live longer, but after some time the same errors occur.
Now the oopses seem to be just random oopses.

Really amazing...
1280x1024 scrolling with matroxfb was awfully slow...
With mga and agpgart it's as fast as consoles are
normally.
Next I'll try changing modes without changing to 1024x768
on loading modules and then acceleration.

I have a Matrox G450 and Kernel 2.4.0.
Vesafb works fine, however not matroxfb.
First, matroxfb.o does not exist.
Any other module in the matrox directory doesn't do anything.
strace fbset -s returns -ENOSYS for /dev/fb0, which exists.
Loading matroxfb_base.o crashes the computer immediately.

There are two patches for the prerelease:
pub/linux/kernel/testing/prerelease-diff and
pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/patch-2.4.0-prerelease.tar.bz2.
The first does not fit to any of my kernels. Besides,
the newer testing kernels are not
accessible any more on www.kernel.org

With test13-pre6 I suddenly found that I could not change the console.
When I wanted to enter a command letters were changed:
greek \mu appeared for m,
tilde n for e.
After a few seconds the system returned to normal behaviour.
No messages can be found in the logfiles.

The EXT2-fs errors I recently reported for test11 seem to be gone with

overcommit_memory turned on nor off; maybe the error was due to
turning on write cache of my hard disk.
