Just a quick follow-up to correct a typo:
the command to run after editing /etc/lilo.conf is
/sbin/lilo -v
(I believe I ran two words together, which might have been confusing)
Also as to placement of the append line; it goes in the stanza that
looks something like this one:

Peter;
Fo what it's worth - I use a parallel-port printer (LaserJet 6L) and
$ lsmod | grep parport
parport_pc 25608 1 (autoclean)
parport23336 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc lp]
So I think Ray is right and you are missing a module...

You might want to look at
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/
seems a bit outdated (2002-11-12) but it looks informative.
For Mandrake try

The Mozilla "Composer" editor is quite useful as well; if you have Moz

This is not exactly a problem, since currently Mozilla appears to be
working. I'm curious as to why the following has happened:
1. I updated to the latest Mozilla in Debian Sid by doing an "apt-get
install mozilla".This installed Mozilla 1.5-3.
2.Initially certain functions failed to operate. For

One way is to type at the prompt:
startx -- :1
which will start x on tty8 if tty7 is the default.
Of course, you can also do
startx -- :2 and so on but -- :1 would be the usual second session.
Hope this helps.
To switch between them you would type alt-F8 0r alt-F7 or perhaps
ctrl-alt-F7 or F8
