Thanks to all, I was able to cure the problem in an unexpected way. I tried
downloading one of those dos utils to view and kill the files (not LIST 'cuase it cost
something, and I don't need that kind of help often) and they couldn't find the files
either. I also tried attrib and still no luck.
you are right, I did some tinkering, and xdm/gdm doesn't use .xinitrc

Here's a quick summary. I was not using .xsession, I had been using .xinitrc, and I
actually suspescted that that was causing me fits, so I commented otu all that was in
the .xinitrc to see if that would fix it. It
I just upgraded my PC from RH6.0 to RH7.0. Under 6.0 I had it setup so that users log
in from the console and then "startx" to get into X (runstate 3). I know, old
technology, but it worked.
Anyway, with the upgrade I accepted runstate 5 as my defualt so I would get a gui
login. We'll I login
