I haven't been able to discover a glossary to let me know what a .iso
file actually is, what .iso stand for. Someone?

I would suggest ubuntu, but maybe i am just contrary.
i say so because it is in active development, people seem to have had
good results, its very up to date in terms of kernel and versions of
software, it seems to stick to the OS ethic.

I have downloaded Ubuntu Live Linux which is two files which are about
the size of a CD.
I have Nero Burning and now wish to make a bootable CD with these two files.
What procedure do I use to accomplish this please?

If these are standard ISOs then in Nero normal mode, not the wizard mode, use
the menu system:
Recorder -> Burn Image
Find the image you have downloaded and away you go. Easy. They will be
bootable if the files you have downloaded were made to be bootable ISOs.

I am trying to set up Mandrake Move (Live CD). Several things I dont
seem to be unable to accomplish at this stage.
1) Cant set up an Internet connection. I have used the default
selections (selected radio buttons). I have an IHUG account for the
purpose.
I had difficulty finding out where
I'd like to make my desktop just work at the moment.
I have a feeling that the lightning storm at lunchtime, which seemed to be
centred near home, may have fried my motherboard or at least the onboard
NIC.
It is a bit hard to diagnose from work but it does not sound good from the
