http://www.dnsreport.com provides a nice overview of the provision for a
domain.

For external services? No, there's no advantage in doing that, because
all domain registrars offer good name service for free with the domains,
and it's an advantage to use the registrar's servers rather than your
home one because it's better to have the nam

does anyone run their own DNS server? my ISP sent me an e-mail slapping
me for leaving recursion on. this is all that's required for bind9:
options {
allow-recursion { none; };
};

The current release tarball of the bind distribution has a folder full of
comprehensive documentation.

Catches a lot of the spam pretending to be daemoncrud too.

Usual final failure is after 7 days, but you get a first warning after
4 hours (which is good, because then you know you can't assume it got
there), and get a status something like every day. As the mail server

Because it's the rule of the internet. Period. :)
The internet was designed to be redundant. If one of your DNS servers
disappears, the other will be queried. If there was only one, you would
de fact
It does , just you wont have your domain resolved if the boxen dumps

DNS is only useful if you have a domain name to play with. When you buy
a domain, you virtually always get a DNS service with it - using the
registry's DNS server is more reliable and a lot faster. If you go to
places like
I simply asked the nice people at paradise to sort out my dns, I only
have a few entries, all of which point to my one fixed ip address (I
think I have www.rout.co.nz, rout.co.nz and maybe smtp.rout.co.nz)

Overly excited about all this, but now that I've calmed a little, I'm
guessing that a Static IP address (I specifically asked for one) means I can
run a BIND/Qmail arrangement on my server at home, Galaxy.
Trick is, I've had
