I am pleased to report the success of Envy in resolving my ongoing issue
with an nvidia driver. Would recommend anyone with nvidia problems give
it a go.
I'll note a couple of things - first, trying to do this last thing

Man thats great, I was just looking for the name of that tool i read about
a week ago for installing the nvidia driver on ubuntu/debian and you found
it for me!!

Hi, what might be the problem with this (the most recent backup)
xorg.conf file? Related to the NVIDIA driver kinda not loading and not
being able to startx?

I have deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf (after making a backup), and it now
boots to a graphical login.
system settings -> restricted drivers previously showed "NVIDIA
accelerated graphics drivers" as "in use", and now shows "not in use".
I'm waiting, hoping that I'm not back to having the machine

I had exactly the same problem you discrube here with a Ubuntu
Feisty 32bit system, and also struggled to find a proper solution.
In the end i worked around the problem by creating a startup script
that runs before x starts to remove the loaded nvidia module, and
