approach
1. Uses even more valuable real-estate from the song editor
2. Is not particularly useful for a BB Editor pattern that uses more than
one style instrument.

I suppose that would be fine. Fluendo provides a legal version for use
on Ubuntu (just like their DVD program). fortunately the mp3 part works
much better than the DVD program.
So it would be good to look for fluendo as well... though that may
