In the lts.conf file, set the RUNLEVEL = 3
that will give you a bash shell prompt.
Then, if you want to run X, you can do this:
sh /tmp/start_ws

I have LTSP 2.08 installed with a ThinkNIC client. The client is not
configured for local apps. How might I go about logging in to the client?
I just want to run a shell in order to poke around, run ps -aux to see what
is running, etc.

Thanks to Matt Egan for that tip .
Making a different floppy did help but now when I boot
up the client I get this error.

what runlevel are you running the workstation in ?
It is controlled by an entry in the lts.conf file.
Look for 'RUNLEVEL = x'.
I'm guessing you have runlevel 4 setup.
Runlevel 4 will give you a login on the server. then, if you run
'startx', you are running it
