I just installed open office 1.0 on my LTSP server.
When I start the application on a terminal client,
the application start on the server console.
What's the trick to get it on the client console ?

Tom,
For workstations, I consider the bare minimum something
with a PCI bus and at least 16mb of ram.
For the server, that totally depends on what apps you want
to run. And it also depends on what you consider acceptable
performance.
You'd be surprised what a PII with 128mb of ram can do, alth

The power supply is a 12volts power adaptor like HP ones for
portables pc's; it reduce in the case to 5 and 3 volts.

The performance, while still in the workstation,
is very poor, but after telneting to the server there
is no problem, of course
This sounds like my problem - has there been any progress on this?
For 486's, i've been getting alot of reports that the initrd isn't being
loaded in RAM properly. This seems to be a problem relating to mknbi-linux.
mknbi-linux version 1.2-5, it seemed to work fine, but the latest LTSP

Yes, let us see what a 396 half-breed looks like :)
I have tried LTSP on 486DX with 8mb ram, the next thing I will try is
my 386DX20 with 8mb ram which is presently used a linux router box.

What is the minimum amount of RAM that is needed for a workstation without
having to recompile the kernel?
I here reference to * M RAM systems but that would require a recompile
wouldn't it?

Pedro,
Sorry, but 4mb of ram just isn't enough.
The minimum for LTSP is about 8mb and even then,
you need to enable NFS-Swap

Brian,
the /dev directory in the workstation uses devfs, that is
it's a virtual device filesystem.
As the kernel loads modules and detects devices, the device
nodes will be created automatically.
If you aren't seeing any ttyS* nodes, then it's likely you
haven't loaded the serial module.

Tom,
To utilize the pcmcia network card, you can use the ltsp_wireless
package. It contains drivers for all of the linux supported pcmcia
network cards (including wired).
But, you'll have to boot the laptop from some local media, such
as a floppy or a flash disk.
We're working on making flash

My workstation /dev doesn't include any /dev/ttySx devices or /dev/mouse
It does have /dev/psaux but my serial mouse doesn't work with that
The server /opt/ltsp/i386/dev is empty
How do you add items to /dev?

My LUG wants to install a portable LAN at our meeting room in a public
library. The library is allowing us to use a small closet to store our
gear. We decided on a headless server, 6-12 laptops and a 10/100 switch.
We very much want to purchase diskless laptops to keep the acquisition
costs down,
Rachid,
Take a look at your /etc/hosts.allow file and make
sure you are alling 192.168.2.
Also, look at /var/log/secure and /var/log/messages
to see if there are any clues.

Phil,
The ltsp_kernel-3.0.3 package has a number of small problems,
including a broken LPP setup.
So, if you really want the LPP, go back to the 3.0.1 kernel
package which includes 'vmlinuz-2.4.9-ltsp-lpp-5'.
Or, wait till I get a chance to put out a new kernel package.
Jim.
