The easy way:
make sure your [xgk]dm uses the defaults
ie use xdm

Autologin:
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. The problem turned out to be
security being too tight. Solution (with RedHat 9) was:
System Settings -> Security Level
Set to "No firewall"
