Christian, While GDM is running, it's constantly pinging the clients, to make sure they are still alive. It's using the X protocol, not ICMP ping. If it doesn't get a reply from the workstation in a specified amount of time (recent versions default to 15 seconds), then it assumes that the Xserve

A few more points... NFS swap was turned on _after_ the crashes. The three workstations were back up and running the rest of the day and following day (now), although one of the workstations crashed again on the same day. As noted in older posts to this list, the nfs swap may fix it. I just tho
