I have a new installation of Edubuntu 12.04 on a 6 core amd with 16 gb of ram. Everything is working fine when logged into the server and at one client station but none of the other clients will let anyone in. The users on the bad clients do get authenticated but after authentication the screen

I've configured ldap to support clients updating their own passwords, so yes it's possible. You need to look at your ACLs on LDAP to make sure users can update that field for themselves. It's been several years since I did this but I can tell you without question it can be done.
