Abraham,

We have ca. 50 THIN clients (2 labs + some groups and single ones)
running on an Intel Xeon system (simplest Xeon CPUs with only 4 cores,
i. e. 2 real, 2 virtual, so 8 in total), 8 GB RAM, 6 SATA HDs (no RAID).
This runs fine with any Linux distro and any LTSP version. The server
has GBit
It sounds like your requirements for a switch are minimal. Buy the
cheapest, they are all the same at the entry-level. Buy 2 because they are
cheap and LTSP will utterly fail if the switch fails.

Hey,
I am not knowledgeable about SSDs, but buying one that exceeds the speed of
the SATA controllers in your T40 and T60 (SATA1 1.5gbps as near as I can
tell) is probably a waste. You will be better off buying a server with
SATA2.
I didn't see that, thanks! Also, what server do you

Hello,
My school is getting 40 - 100 computers from a company getting rid of
theirs. (There all IBM T60s and T40s.) With the computers we get, we
plan on setting up a computer lab with LTSP. We have decided that we
will be using Edubuntu as our OS. From what I have read online it
appears that a
Not sure where this '7' number is coming from...
But, the way that fat clients work is that they boot the same central
root OS from a central server, and execute that OS using local
resources. Once a user logs in, the LTSP login manager will
automatically mount directories from the central server

I think you'll find that one capable server can handle many more than
7 clients in most circumstances. Since the server's only real workload
is to feed files to the clients,
Jay,
7 clients connected to a server comes from the fact the T60s have a
limited amount of computing power to sustain 7 clients. At least thats
what I read from a guide by Edubuntu. BTW, thanks for the fast answer.
Now my only question now is: how do I connect the clients to a server?
I have
David,
Thanks for the help guys. Just one question I don't understand: Do I
need a network switch to connect the clients to the server or is it
done wirelessly?
Thanks,

You need a switch with gigabit speed or better.

Further on that, you can only PXE boot computers over an Ethernet
connection, so it must be connected at all times. You are talking
about T40 and T60 laptops, but it will be impossible to make them
mobile with LTSP over wireless, you'd need to install the Linux distro
to hard disk.
Otherwise, if
Fat clients are a good way to go because they take less from a server,
however they are more difficult to control in a classroom environment.
The new fat client system with 12.04 looks very exciting.

I think you should check out the cluster
Hey,
Are you saying I shouldn't do fat clients? And what network switch do
you recommend for 20 clients? Also is this a good ssd:

You select the entry saying Network boot or PXE boot in the BIOS
of the machine.
It will then get network parameters (IP, etc.) from your DHCP server
and download what is needed

I don't think so (so, you should probably do fat clients in your
case). If I understand right, your clients are just
