Troy, if your using kdm you'll be able to choose your window manager. I'm
using Mandrake 8.1 so by default kdm is running. With the exception of the
background on the login screen (and screen resolution) it should look just
like your server.

I'm sure it is me who is missing something. I have seen two desktop
environments for linux (and I'm sure there are more). I have installed,
currently use, and have become fond of KDE. I have seen what appears to be
a plain X Windows screen also (by using VNC to try to access this same
linux
It will look like whatever you want it to. Or am I missing something here.

There was a problem with LTSP 2.08, where it didn't setup KDM properly.
Actually the problem is because they changed KDM to have its own config
file, where
previous versions of kdm used the xdm config files.
Anyway, the trick is to find your kdmrc file using the locate command.

on the terminals.
By the way, the terminal seem to boot fine to a point. I get the initial
grayish screen
