Hi Stephen,
try pressing ctrl-alt-backspace as you see this screen. This SOMETIMES
happens on our machines - got NO CLUE WHY. But they run fine (means gdm gets
started) after I restart the Xserver like this.

/etc/inittab contains "x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon"
netstat -ap | grep xdmcp gives this.
