I finally solved this problem for myself.
First off it was suggested I was trying to use the kernel with an
unsupported architecture. This was not the case, but it may be for you?
For me it was because I was using 5.1.3 or 5.1.5 versions of the
bootdisk from www.rom-o-matic.com - try using 5.0.8

just inter the floppy (do not mount it) and type the following command
under linux:
cat eb-5.0.8-.lzdsk > /dev/fd0
that should do the trick ;-)
