I had the experience that if I used the server as a workstation and it
freezes as happened to me occasionally I needed to reboot the machine
hosing all other terminals. If I had the same problem on the client I
could just restart the client and everyone else kept running fine.

On a small network, with a few clients, I think it's very practical to use
the server as one of the workstations.
But, I prefer to leave the server alone, and NOT run X on it. The reason
for that is, when X is running, you will never see any kernel messages,
