You seem to use the Xfree3.3.6 Svga server as you updated from 2.08...
have you tried just to put XSERVER=auto in the lts.conf in ord to use
Xfree4 version of video driver ?
that may solve your problem.

Anytime i've seen what looks like vertical bars, instead of fonts, it
has been caused by using the wrong X server for the video card.
in my case, it was an S3 video card and I tried using the SVGA
Xserver.
Try using a different Xserver, and I believe your problem will

have upgraded from 2.08 to 2.09pre4 and have one slight problem
Workstation boots ok all looks good except I am getting vertical bars
instead of fonts on menu items, terminals sessions etc..
It is like a system font is missing. Server is all ok.
i used the lts_x_core and lts_x_fonts for 2.
