AFAIK, OpenFirmware on the Powerbook G4 will not boot from USB devices,
except if its a CDROM. Or at least that was what I found when trying to
install Ubuntu/Gentoo/Lubuntu on my PBG4.
Unless the drive isn't stock, I believe all Powerbook G4's should be able
to read from and boot from DVDs, so

I have a colocated server (running xenserver) that I could load up with
QEMU to emulate a 486 machine. I could give this to the list if anybody is
interested.
I also have a real 486 machine too I might be able to dig out of storage
too.

list hashing algorithm changed and the list would wipe out if incorrect.
That was fixed a couple of months after.
Banshee works well, amarok also works well but Banshee is more visually
appealing.

I'm on the mailing list. I'm running (attempting to) Lubuntu 13.04 on a
Powerbook G4 1.67 as well as eventually on a few G4 XServes (once I get my
DIY server rack finished). Things like the touchpad are extremely wonky
(the cursor movement is very square-ish -- the cursor moves less in
