For the Trauerode, if memory serves, you need some chromatic notes.
When I recorded it I tuned my D to C and tuned a few chromatic notes
in the long strings.
Gorgeous music!
Of course it could be for two lautenwerken. Bach had several, along
with a lute and a viol.

I wish I had such a resource when I was learning those pieces from film.
Sarge deserves a medal.

They ones I have played have a relatively open sound, which I like,
possibly because of the slightly larger rose spacing.

There are a number of technical challenges here becasue MP3 is a
lossy format. So there are holes in the sound. Easiest way to fill in
the sound is with a room simulator, like SIR
You can also use a frequency exciter to supply missing harmonics.

Just as combining the registers of a harpsichord
produces a very different sound, so do double
strings on a theorbo. It is clear that this
quality sound was very much desired historically,
and in many ways is the opposite of modern practice in professional circles.
Well, there is a reason for

Does anyone have a figure for nylon breaking point, not in pitch but
in KG per mm?
I'm sure I have seen this somewhere on the list, but can't find it.

David,

b) MPa = 10^6 Pa = 10^6 N/m^2 = 10^5 Kg/m^2 = 0.1 Kg/mm^2.
In other words, something in the range 4.5-7.5 Kg/mm^2.

Hi David,
The tensile strength of Dupont Tynex Nylon is 44600 lbs per square
inch which Google translates as 31 356 903.3 kg / m2.

Thinnest nylon is 0.36mm.
At 40N that would be around 80cm for g1 (415H)
Conclusion: one can tune a 80cm theorbo as an archlute, with modern strings.

Wow, that seems pretty extreme. I bet it would sound pretty tinny at
80cm.
The part I always find confusing is that the breaking point is not
related to diameter, just the length and the pitch.
But I have an 80cm lute here so I may just pop a few strings on to see
how high it

This discussion of breaking pitch has me wondering: Knowing the breaking
pitch of gut, can we use the rule of tuning a treble to just below breaking
pitch to determine at about what pitch lutes were tuned historically?
