Hi,
In the introduction to Livre de tablature des pieces de luth, Denis
Gaultier mentions a Monsieur de Montarcis, recommending his books on
lute performance. He says one of his books would be published soon
and one other had been published recently.

Dear all,
Not sure if it's been posted here, but I found a lute on Lost TV
series, season 6, chapter 4. It shows only for some seconds, but you
can see it on a table, just like old paintings. It's a Renaissance 8c
lute and it even has a broken string! (which is actually a clever
Andrew,
My first lute was an EMS 8c and it was very disappointing. I used to spend a
long time trying to tune it because of its awful pegbox mechanism, strings
broke very easily or were damaged due to a harsh nut and the soundboard was
too thick for a good sound. This is very discouraging for a
Hi Herbert,
I ordered the same method from Ut Orpheus and my experience was positive as
well. It took a bit as they're based in Italy and I'm in Latin America, but
the book arrived in good shape. However, you should compare shipping cost
with other sellers as it's a heavy book.
Best,

Hi Danny, Arto and all,
This is an interesting subject indeed a will nd I agree with Arto in that
putting borderlines between musical periods can be confusing. However, it's
clear there was a particular style between French and German styles and perhaps
it deserves its own name!

Dear Graham,
I second Ned, although I should add that nylon frets don't hold to the
fingerboard as well as gut does, so they move very easily when playing.
However they're a good work-around in case of emergency.

Hi all,
I've found this lute in a painting by Jacques Linard, (France,
1600-1645). It's called The Five Senses and the Four Elements, so I
guess the lute represents hearing. What kind of lute is this?

I don't think Lislevand's recording is kitsch, which implies a tasteless

interesting arrangements. Of course it can shock some conservative ears, but
it's a matter of taste.
IMO he's trying to do something interesting,
