A hearty thanks to Drs Ness, Ceruti, and Galletti for the lovely performance
and most pleasant experience. Had never before seen fascinating Little Italy
in San Diego which is enjoying a Renaissance. One must book accomodations for
any summer San Diego event as every single room in hotel
Dear Claudia,
Looking ahead 6 months to a drier future down under, and borrowing trouble
therefrom, may I share experience of having just the opposite problem in bone
dry semiarid inland southern CA. At the LSA meeting someone whipped out a
plastic peg tuner and I asked what the h is that?
Dear David,
Mr. Edmond Beylerian works in Michigan. I believe he is an acoustical engineer
with some unique skills and knowledge by which he can analyze, maximize, and
somehow optimize sound from the lutes he manufactures. I heard he gained some
training with Robert Lundberg back in the 70s.
Dear Anthony,
I need to apologize for not identifying you initially as one of the worthy
great ones who should have these strings first, and am glad to hear you
obtained at least some of them. There are genuine advantages to living in the
civilized world instead of the provinces. Have you
Curtis Daily of Portland, OR reports that he does not know as yet when he will
receive a shipment of NNGs.
Luckily, those most worthy are given them by the string gods, and have
generously reported their virtues.
Thank you, Ed and David.

Dear Dr. Freeman,
Partly out of curiosity, or as an idiotic experiment, I once last year
attempted to prepare a fret using a thick strand of nylgut. When your match
flame hits the end of the nylgut, it turns into a gooey black mess which drips
and soils whatever might be around, so I do not
Dear Samuel,
Though I cannot be definitive, years ago I purchased on ebay a 13 cs baroque
lute having similar features and price which was made by a highly skilled
Englishman or Irishman named A.(Anthony) Murphy. It had unique not entirely
historical features including a laterally doubled
I agree with Nancy that this is a gorgeous recording by Claire Antonini. I
found that by pressing the pause key at a brief moment in the photo sequence,
the tablature can be
displayed large enough for hand copying. MMle Antonini adds a little very
pleasant improvisation toward the end. Thank
I was determined to see the Tafelmusic performance at 8PM on Wednesday Feb 3
The Galileo Project after I spotted its ad in the LA Times Sunday edition a
week earlier. Had taken days off to bring my wife 75 miles to UCLA radiology
for 2-year follow up scans, but had to appear at 7AM for her CT
I can also testify to the excellence of Mel Wong's work. He replaced the
soundboard on my old
1963 Raymond Passauro 7 course and I didn't even have to pay him because the
previous owner did, or at least I hope he/they did.

I remember my mother, who majored in music before she quit Cardinal Stritch
College back in the 1940s to get married (mistake?), that a famous composer
(forgot the name) was asked why there were no superfamous women composers.
His answer went something like this---men pursue music. Woman ARE
Hello Chris,
Since you are actively engaged in scholarly pursuits regarding the lute,
have you run into any decomposing lute composers who have been found to be
women?
I only have music by Madamoiselle Bocquet. Are there others that you can
identify?
There have got to be others. Or is it
Dear Doc Daniel Shoskes,
Greetings and mucho congratulations to you, Doc Shoskes. Though I have enjoyed
your videos for months, I just signed up for this list after first learning
about it at Vancouver 2009. I heard you were the major player in setting up
the list, so thank you! With
